Mrs Marshall calling...........day 17

Good morning again………

The last few days I have been getting you to think about keeping your mind healthy – I hope you all had the chance to try some of the activities I suggested.  Let me know how you got on

Today we are going to think about keeping our body healthy – healthy body – healthy mind.  We are going to talk about FRUIT.  At this time of year there are lots of fruits available to buy – do you have a favourite fruit?  Have a look at the pictures below – how many different fruits can you name?

When you think of fruit you probably think of something small and sweet – but this is not always true  as some fruit does not taste sweet at all.  Berries are fruit that have their seeds in the inside – there may be many seeds or only one.  Other fruits have a ‘core’  – most of us do not eat the core – we throw it away.  Some fruits are lots of little berries all stuck together – like blackberries.  I’m sure you have all eaten fruit that has no seeds in the inside – like seedless grapes or satsumas or water melons – that happens because the plant was not pollinated and fertilised normally.

Why not take part in our fruit quiz………or our fruit experiment…….I will post the answers up this afternoon and you can see how well you know your fruit.

Quiz

A strawberry has it’s seeds on the OUTSIDE – does that mean it is not a berry?

Does an orange or an kiwi fruit have more vitamin C?

Are nuts fruits?

Name a fruit that does not have the word berry in its name.

What are fruits that have a core called?  This is a HARD question

Roughly how many seeds would you find inside a pomegranate?

Around 100…around 500…..or around 1,000?

Can you name a fruit that is pollinated by bats not bees?  Another hard one

Which one is the odd one out?   Pumpkin–cucumber–olives–                                                                                        avocado–sweet potato–peppers

Experiment

Before you try the experiment answer these questions –

Do you think a satsuma, tangerine or orange would float in a bowl of water?    Yes or No

Now peel the fruit – do you think it will float now?    Yes or No

Can you explain your answer?

Now try the experiment.  What happened?  Were you right?  Can you explain the result?

Pop back this afternoon and I will have all the answers for you…..good luck.
