Phonics Activities

Good afternoon, Primary 1!

I hope you get a chance this afternoon to log back into your Journals for this week’s phonics lesson. We are learning a very tricky sound this week – the ‘wh’ sound. This is a brand new sound to us so don’t worry if you find this one difficult today, we can always practise!

The ‘wh’ sound comes at the beginning of lots of question words: who, what, where, when, why. Can you have a go at home of asking different questions? Perhaps you could ask questions about a story book that you are reading! Remember to listen hard for the ‘wh’ sound when you say your question words.

You may want to watch this video of Geraldine the Giraffe as she learns the ‘wh’ sound:

She manages to find different things with the ‘wh’ sound in them in her house. Are any of these things in your house or garden?

Here is a ‘wh’ question game you might want to play at home.

You might want to just ask and answer the questions or you can use it like a board game! Can you make up your own board game like this one with your own questions?

The ‘wh’ sound also comes at the start of the word ‘whale’. Perhaps you could draw or paint your own whale and try to write the word correctly underneath. Remember this is a magic e word!

Today is also the beginning of a brand new month. Perhaps you could make this special calendar wheel so you are always aware of the date!

Have a good day, Primary 1! Remember to share all your pictures with us on the Learning Journals.
